Last February, I got contacted by a kettlebell lifter from Saga, the city next to where I live.
He told me about John Wild and Nazo who were going to do a kettlebell workshop in Yamaguchi prefecture the next week. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the workshop but didn't miss the next opportunity when Nazo herself contacted me about their Japan Tour the next summer. I've been using kettlebell in my training since 2004. It is such a great tool that you are missing something if you are not using them. After I moved to Kyushu, I couldn't find any gym with kettlebells so I bought couple pairs that I keep for myself or bring to my clients and athletes when we train. Honestly speaking, I know they were from Russia, I bought Mike Mahler's Aggressive Strength DVD and incorporated some movements - especially the swing and the clean and jerk - but that was it. Knowing that 3 famous kettlebell instructors (with Jason Dolby this time) were making the trip to Japan, I would have been crazy to miss that. Telling you that what I've learned from them totally blew me away is far from the truth. I've discovered a brand new and fascinate world. First, I've learned very recently that kettlebell is actually a sport itself, just like Olympic lifting. The kettlebell sport sounds like an inhuman performance, performing movements for time. Can you lift weights during 1 minute without rest? Yes? May be for 2 or 3 minutes... but how many clean and jerks can you do during 10 minutes with no break? If you know me, you know I like challenges and this time I got hooked! I attended Orange Kettlebell Club's event to learn about the techniques and also to learn about Indian Clubs as I am a big believer in mobility training. And let me tell you this: Indian Club IS THE SHIT! Once I hold them and did the movements learned by Jason, I knew I was holding a weapon of mass construction! No kidding. I've been suffering from VERY tied shoulder blades and painful neck for years but after just 2 days of using Indian clubs, I know I am going to use them for the rest of my life. I felt so much release on my neck and shoulders. If you are an athlete you'd be stupid not to use them. If I was using them at the time I was playing baseball, I'm sure I would have been a better player. Jason’s knowledge about mobility was so advanced that I really felt pity for those personal trainers who were in the gym not to have been part of the event. I could see some so called "charisma trainers" laughing at what we were doing... I just feel nothing for those who are not trying to become better. Everybody suffers from shoulder pain, neck pain, low back pain, knee pain. Most people do not know that those pains mostly come from weak and tied muscle and that ketltlebell + mobility training with the Indian Clubs can help them. People need to understand that with a weak posterior chain and tied joint, you will never achieve whatever it is you want to achieve: being muscular, losing weight, being an athlete, whatever. People tend to believe it is a fate not to be flexible (and I was one one of them), but this is bullshit! Get a foam roller and a pair of Indian clubs, and I guaranty you that you will become awesome at what you do. Jason, John and Nazo are so enthusiastic about kettlebell training, and about anything! It was just great to hang on with them after the event and talk about training or their experience in Russia. I am so proud I met them and I am very looking forward to seeing them again. I really treasure moments I spend with great people and those two days with them just changed something in me to become better. I am sure that my journey will bring me to them very soon. ![]() Nicolas AMP has been the owner of Nico Dojo since 2005.
